According to the FCC website, eligible telephone subscribers on Tribal lands may receive basic local phone service for as little as $1 a month. Link-Up provides eligible consumers with a one-time initial hook-up discount of up to %50.

Eligible subscribers include those who have participated in:

  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly Food Stamps)
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
  • National School Lunch Programs Free Lunch Program
  • Tribally-Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
  • Head Start (those meeting income-qualifying standard)

The Importance of Landline Telephones this Winter

Gloves: check. Scarf: check. Hat: check. Landline telephone: check? Most people don’t think about a landline when thinking about weather safety precautions. You’re probably thinking, “Well I have my cell phone, why would I need a landline?” We don’t blame you. Cell phones are great on the go and bring some of the best technology right to your fingertips. What most people don’t know is that cellular towers are not required to provide backup power. So, when we get hit with a Midwestern blizzard your cellphone may not work through a power outage. Great Plains Communications wants to shed some light on just a few of the advantages to having a landline telephone.

  • Security in an emergency, with consistent reliable 911 connections and the guarantee it will work through a power outage
  • No need for batteries or charging when using a corded phone
  • Elimination of potentially faulty connection and dropped calls
  • Top-quality sound and clarity

Remember, if the power isn’t working in your home, most likely neither are your cordless phones. Keep your family safe this season and make sure you have a corded phone plugged into a wall-mounted phone jack. That way you can be sure to have a clear and reliable connection, no matter what Old Man Winter throws our way.

Get Rid of Stress with the National Do Not Call Registry

Still receiving those annoying dinner-time phone calls? Kids being woken up each night by the phone ringing? That’s because legally, telemarketers are allowed to call until 9 p.m. each day. Now, you can register your number with the National Do Not Call Registry and get rid of that unwanted stress.

The National Do Not Call Registry provides the opportunity to block telemarketing calls at home. Registering your phone number will stop most telemarketing calls, but will not stop calls from certain non-profit and political organizations. Organizations with which you have established a business relationship will also be allowed.

You can register your residential and wireless phone numbers. To do so, either register over the telephone or by Internet at no cost to you. When registering on the Internet, you may register up to three numbers at one time. If registering via telephone, you can only register one number at a time and must call from the number you are looking to register. Your phone number will appear on the Do Not Call list the following day. However, telemarketers have up to 31 days to remove the number from their calling lists. A telephone number will only be removed from the registry when it is disconnected, reassigned, or if you choose to remove it.

To register or to remove a number from the Do Not Call Registry, call 1.888.382.1222, for TTY call 1.866.290.4236 or register on the Internet at

An Update on the Recent Robocalls Situation

Recently, Great Plains Communications dealt with a situation that has affected many phone companies across the nation.  However, we are pleased to report that it appears that the issue has been resolved.

The situation centered on Robocalls.  These calls are made via an automatic computer system using a pre-recorded message that often solicits for personal information.  The calls often originate overseas, yet have false U.S. area codes.

While most of these calls are simply annoying, they can be potentially fraudulent if they try to get your personal information. Our customers did not receive scam calls, simply messages that were attempting to reach a fax machine.  Since the calls are automatically made, they are sent out 24/7, which means that calls may come in the middle of the night.

We want our customers to know that we understand how annoying these calls were over the last several weeks.  To help our customers, we provided a landline blocking feature at no cost for one month.  While this issue was not unique to our customers, we did want to make sure that their service was not compromised.

Our team worked very closely with our customers and the Federal Communications Commission to investigate these Robocalls and put a stop to them.  According to the latest reports from our Customer Response Center, the calls have stopped.  We want to thank our customers for reporting this issue to us.  Our accurate tracking of the situation did help to provide the FCC with vital information.

Three New Reasons to Keep Your Landline Phone

1. It’s the best way to secure your home:  Many emergency systems demand a dependable landline connection to make the system work.  It is certainly necessary for many emergency alert pendants who use a wireless connection to a landline device to ensure that an emergency isn’t missed due to spotty cell reception.  When you have a critical health situation, you don’t want to worry about bad reception!

2. It’s the only way to work from home:  Working from home at least a few days a month is becoming more and more popular.  However, poor call quality makes you sound unprofessional and few bosses will okay telecommuting if you are going to drop off of important calls.  Many of today’s cellular phones focus more on the apps on the phone than providing good voice quality.  That is never a problem with landlines.

3. Having a landline can actually save you money: Thanks to bundling, having a landline phone can actually help you save on your other services.  When you bundle with Great Plains Communications, you can save up to 40%.  You may be surprised just how cheap it is to have the reliability and safety of a landline in your home.

Link-Up with the Lifeline Program

Did you know that you may be able to get help paying for your landline phone?  The Nebraska Telephone Assistance Program can help to significantly reduce the costs of your monthly bill.

If you participate in any of the following government programs: Medicaid, Food Stamps, Federal Housing Assistance, Low Income Energy Assistance, or Food Stamps, then you may qualify.  Those who are on a fixed income may also qualify even if they live in a nursing home or other cooperative arrangement.

Those who live on Tribal lands are eligible to receive many additional benefits through the FCC’s Lifeline including, but not limited to, landline telephone assistance. Eligible residents of Tribal land include those who participate in Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Tribally-Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TTANF), or Head Start (those meeting its income qualifying standard). You can find more information on the Tribal Lifeline Program at

Eligible telephone lines can receive service for as little as $1 per month.  Link-Up, a program to help with set-up fees, provides customers with additional discounts.  With a maximum $30 discount, users could save up to 50% on their first bill.  For example, a $70 installation fee would cost an eligible subscriber $40.

Those who live in a Great Plains Communications’ service area may also call us at 1-855-853-1483 for further information.

Three compelling reasons to keep a landline

We understand, you probably love your cell phone.  In fact, more than half of people even take their cell phones to bed with them every night.  However, a cell phone is likely not enough to satisfy all of your technology needs when it comes to making and receiving phone calls.  This is particularly true in the many areas across the state where cellular towers provide spotty coverage, at best.

Keeping a landline phone can provide you significant benefits at a very low costs.

Landlines are safer: If you are providing sensitive information, such as your social security number or credit card data, it’s best to do it over a landline.  That’s because the frequencies used to transmit cellular calls are easy to hack and the risk is growing as thieves become more advanced.  A landline transmits your call over a wireline.  Much, much more secure.

Many home security systems also rely on landline technology to reach their technicians.  If you are looking at adding extra security to your home, a landline may be in order.

Landlines are consistent: When was the last time that you had to worry about your landline dropping a call?  Whether you are calling a customer service center with a long wait (obviously not us!), working from home, or just chatting with friends, a landline will provide a smooth call that you can truly enjoy.  If you use a wireless landline phone, then you also know the benefit of being able to walk around your home without worrying about dead zones in your home.

Less likely to miss calls: The option to turn your cell phone ringer on vibrate or silent is wonderful when you are at the movies or in a meeting.  However, that same technology means that you might miss a truly important call.  A traditional landline phone has a clear ringer that can be heard around the home, especially if you have more than one phone set up for the same number.

Whether your children are out for the night, your boss needs you on-call, or you are waiting to hear from your best friend across the country, you don’t have to worry about missing the call when you have a landline.

There are several more reasons to keep your landline and you can discover them in our next e-newsletter!  If you haven’t signed up for our monthly online newsletters, you can do so here.
